It’s been over a year since the world has changed rapidly. Ever since WHO declared COVID-19 as a global pandemic in March last year, our lives and daily routines have turned upside down. When the world starts falling apart, it’s easy to use productivity as a crutch to feel a sense of normalcy.
Unfortunately, over productivity during this unprecedented time can also become toxic. With so many influencers, self-motivational books, and self-made millionaires pushing you to do more, how can you not feel guilty for being unproductive?

Inactivity Isn’t Our Enemy
We’ve been conditioned to think that being inactive makes us bad people. That we’re lazy. And so, feelings of guilt start to creep up the moment we stop working.
But on a deeper psychological level, productivity helps us forget – even for a few moments, the weight for our problems. This is especially true now that we’re facing a pandemic.
And so we bake, do puzzles, Marie Kondo our closets. But is this really the best way to deal with our stress and anxiety?
It’s okay to not be productive during COVID-19 pandemic. Sometimes doing absolutely nothing is a form of self-care.
Lounge on the couch and space out. Meditate by simply breathing in and out, or relaxing by doing something you love. These things are sometimes all our body and mind need when dealing with anxiety.
We Are Experiencing Grief
Grief is associated with the deep sorrow that comes from losing someone you hold dear. Grief is an immeasurable loss.
However, we also experience grief from experiences or activities we may not be able to enjoy any time soon. The loss of normalcy, loss of connection, and fear of what’s to come.
Sometimes grief results in having your wedding postponed or not being able to see your friends for more than a year. This loss – large or small, can lead to feelings of immense sadness.
With COVID-19, we are all experiencing grief as a result of collective trauma. We are living through an unprecedented event and we don’t know how to properly navigate it.
That said, give yourself a break.
Tell yourself, it’s okay to not be productive during COVID-19. Allow yourself to feel negative emotions. To go through the motions of dealing with grief. Know that you are not alone and that we’ll all get through this together.

Allow Yourself To Slow Down and Do Less
Give yourself grace during this tough time.
If all you can manage today is get out of bed and brush your teeth, then consider that to be enough. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself by being constantly on the move.
Slow down, rest, and reflect. Don’t add the stress of being productive to your already mounting problems.
Acknowledge Your Negative Emotions
Feeling sad about not being able to travel? Sad about what your friends are currently going through?
Acknowledge these negative emotions. Allow yourself to grieve any loss. Pushing them at the back of your head will only intensify the emotion. It’s best to address these emotions so you can properly cope.
Reach out to family or friends if you feel comfortable. Share how you’re feeling.
Do What You Can
While it’s good to set high goals, it could also lead to unproductivity. Why? Because high goals may seem insurmountable. As a result, we procrastinate.
If you feel like that’s what’s happening to you, then set more achievable goals. Do what you can.
For instance, if cleaning the whole house feels overwhelming, then settle for cleaning only one area a day. Find ways to make your day-to-day tasks easier and less stress-inducing.
Find Joy In The Little Things
When we are bombarded with bad news and death statistics every day, it’s easy to feel hopeless and helpless. You owe it to yourself to protect your peace and joy. That said, don’t forget to care for your mental and physical health.
Find joy in your day-to-day life. For instance, if taking a long, warm shower makes you happy, then allow yourself to bask in that feeling.
It’s also a good idea to cut back on your social media consumption. Sometimes mindlessly scrolling through social media posts can suck the joy out of you.
Relax, It’s Okay To Not Be Productive Amidst Covid-19
Everyone is struggling. Now is not the time to compare your growth or lack thereof with others. That said, stop being so hard on yourself. No one is going to judge you for taking some time off when you need it.
Focus on your own healing and support family and friends. Stop proving how productive you can be during quarantine.
